Title: Towards Mesoscale Modelling of Cellular Processes

Abstract: We present validation data and some technical details of our newly developed Monte-Carlo Helfrich solver. Our implementation allows for a localized description of membrane properties. These local properties can be extracted by our previously developed methods. We combine these results to provide first glimpses into a mechanism of endosomal escape. We also show progress into our modelling of mitochondrial membranes and their mixing properties as well as potential consequences for mitochondrial morphology. Special attention is given to cardiolipin and its peculiar electrostatics in contact with protons. Possible detection techniques for interfacial electrostatics are presented.
The limits of a pure surface description in biological systems are shown at the example of bacterial division, where a three dimensional morphoelastic description may provide a way forward to effectively model the different growth dynamics of bacteria.
