MathMAC stands for Mathematical Modelling, Analysis and Computation. The project is funded by the Charles University in Prague in the framework of UNCE (University Centre of Excellence) programme. The vision of UNCE programme is to support excellent teams of young researchers working in fundamental research. MathMAC project was approved in 2012 and will be funded till 2017.
The mission of MathMAC centre is systematic and creative usage of mathematics as the language of natural and social sciences. Our leading idea is to seek for interesting mathematical problems and to apply the state-of-art mathematical tools in applied sciences such as material science (non-newtonian fluids), geophysics, biophysics and medicine. We see the applied sciences as an unlimited source of challenging mathematical problems that can stimulate the development of pure mathematics, and, simultaneously, we are willing to cooperate with the applied scientists on the application of the up-to-date mathematical techniques to the real world problems.
We strive for mathematically rigorous description of natural phenomena on all levels of the mathematical modelling – development of the mathematical model, study of its mathematical properties, design of suitable numerical methods and finally computer simulations. We think that the successful description of natural phenomena requires excellence on all levels, therefore the team is composed of the researchers working in mathematical modelling, mathematical analysis and numerical mathematics. In this respect, the centre can be seen as a continuation of projects Jindřich Nečas Centre for Mathematical Modelling and Theory of Krylov subspace methods and its relationship to other mathematical disciplines.
The integral part of our mission is to do the research in collaboration with bachelor, master and doctoral students, help them to fully develop their potential, and give them a chance to exploit the open and international research environment of the centre.
