Title: Quirky Materials and How to Describe Them
Abstract: The first linear models in continuum mechanics of solids were developed almost two hundred years ago by Augustin Louis Cauchy, and the beginnings of nonlinear elasticity date back to post-war period (Ronald Samuel Rivlin). Considering the age and the perceived maturity of the field, it might seem that all basic problems of interest were solved a long time ago. Surprisingly, the exact opposite is true. With the advent of computational tools people become greedy and they tried to predict the behavior of various complex solid substances ranging from biological materials to exotic alloys and structured meta-materials. Besides the issues related to numerical computations, the important bottleneck in such an effort is the lack of suitable mathematical models for the behavior of such substances. I will briefly go through the history of mathematical models for solid substances, and then I will comment on recent developments in the field. In particular, I will discuss several simple and yet powerful ideas that have greatly expanded the physicist’s arsenal regarding the mathematical modelling of complex solid substances.
